Novel Coronavirus – 2019-nCoV

A novelcoronavirus first diagnosed in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China has also beenreported in other cities in China and other countries including Japan,Thailand, Korea, USA and Australia.

It has beenconfirmed the virus can be transmitted from person to person.

To date, there have been no cases in New Zealand.

What is cornavirus?

Coronaviruscan affect humans and animals. Somecoronaviruses cause illnesses like the common cold and others cause moreserious illnesses, including severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) andMiddle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

What are the symptoms of 2019-nCoV?

Symptoms ofthis virus are similar to a range of other illnesses such as influenza and donot necessarily mean that you have 2019-nCoV. As it is influenza season in thenorthern hemisphere, we expect to see increased numbers of travellers withinfluenza-like illnesses other than cornoavirus

Symptomsinclude:

· Fever

· Cough

· Difficultybreathing – this is a sign of possible pnuemonia and requires immediate medicalattention.

How can you help to reduce thegeneral risk of transmission of acute respiratory infections?

· Avoidclose contact with people suffering acute respiratory infections

· Washhands frequently, especially after ontact with ill people or their environment, before eating, after coughing and sneezing.

· Usegood cough and sneeze etiquette – maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezeswith disposable tissues or clothing. Cough or sneeze into your elbow. Discardused tissues in a bin.

· Ifyou are unwell stay away from lectures or work. Remain at home. Let others know you are unwell.

· Seekmedical advice by phone first and advise of your travel history

All travellers arriving/returning to NZ whobecome unwell within 1 month of theirarrivalshould seek medical advice by phone, advising of your travelHistory. It is important to mention recent travel from the Hubei Province, particularly Wuhan and any known contact with someone with severe acuterespiratory illness who has been in Hubei, particularly Wuhan.

Staff/Studentstravelling to China.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) andMinistry of Health (MOH) recommends avoiding all non-essential travel to theHubei Province.

If you are travelling to other parts of Chinaplease check with your Line Manager, travel agent and insurer. Ministry ofForiegn Affairs and Trade ( MFAT )is advising people to avoidnon-essential travel to china.

Masks.

Masks mayhave a part to play in reducing the riskof viral spread. There is limited evidence to suggest masks reduce the risk ofspreading respiratory viruses.

Evidenceshows best practice is the use of handand cough hygeine, as mentioned above.

However,if you have repiratory symptoms you may choose to take the precaution of usinga mask, to prevent spread to others. When wearing a mask follow these guidelines.

  • Wear the mask consistently, at least whenever there is any risk of infection. People often find them uncomfortable and take them on and off, rendering them ineffective. Wash your hands after removing the mask.
  • Put the mask on correctly, with a good fit covering your nose and mouth. A loose fit between the mask and face will not provide protection from germs or contaminants.
  • Do not let the mask give you a false sense of security. Wearing a mask does not mean you should avoid tried and true hygiene practices. Wash your hands regularly, keep away from people who are coughing and sneezing, cover your coughs and sneezes (and wash your hands afterwards), and don’t touch your mouth, nose or eyes after touching a potentially contaminated object.
  • If you experience symptoms, such as cough, headache, fever, sore throat or a general unwell feeling, remain at home.
