建筑类专业本科学位介绍

Pre-professional architecture degree非专业学位

非专业学位，学制为四年。学位一般有BS in Architecture, BS in Architectural Studies, BA in Architecture, Bachelor of Environmental Design, Bachelor of Architectural Studies等。第一年基本上是与建筑无关的基础课或核心课，从第二年才开始建筑专业的课程。

读完此学位，要再读两年才可以拿到专业学位（Professional architecture degree）即M.Arch1。被称作”four-plus-two” program（共六年）。

Professional architecture degree (B.Arch)专业学位

Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) 是第一个专业学位，学时长五年。从第一年开始就是专业的建筑课程，因此申请这种学位要求申请者入学之前就决定自己的专业，是不能选了undecided或其他专业再转入建筑系的。

五年制的学位，简称B.Arch，一般是设置在建筑学院(或设计学院)下面，用来培养掌握专业技能的建筑设计师，对于专业课程的训练全面而深入，注重学生美学设计和工程基础的结合，有大量的设计课程，要求学生锻炼设计的能力。在最后1年的学业中通常会相应提供给学生实践类的机会，去接触不同的设计项目。特点是：专业度高、含金量高、申请难度大、对美学或作品的要求高。

这两类建筑学位都可以在本科阶段考虑申请，不同点在于申请难度和学生本人对于未来学习设计的长远规划。简单说，如果你确定自己要成为一名专业的建筑师，建议你考虑直接申请5年制的学位，拿到学位后就有资格去专业的设计师事务所实习或者更优秀者留下来工作。如果你还未确定自己的职业发展，只是感兴趣建筑设计，可以先考虑申请4年制的建筑学位，在本科阶段打牢基础，在将来的硕士阶段去攻读建筑设计学位。

▶ Portfolios

A portfolio is a required and critically important component of the application. All B.Arch. applicants must submit their portfolio online via Cornell AAP SlideRoom. The portfolio should contain several examples of freehand drawings including sketches as well as fully developed work. In addition to drawing, a range of artistic media needs to be demonstrated, but each applicant should emphasize the work where their skills and passion are expressed most strongly. Painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video, woodworking and other crafts can convey artistic experience and aptitude.

Please submit 15-20 slides with no more than two dedicated to the same project. Images must be clear with no text on the page, unless it is integral to the artwork. A carefully crafted caption for each slide should state the intent, elaborate on the process and method, and reflect on the outcome. Include a note that lists the size and medium of each piece, as well as whether the work was completed in class or independently. Any group projects should be credited accordingly and the task performed by the applicant noted specifically.

The deadlines for portfolio submissions are:

November 1 (early decision first-year applicants)

January 2 (regular decision first-year applicants)

October 1 (spring transfer applicants)

March 1 (fall transfer applicants)

Portfolios are added to the applicant's admissions file for review by the architecture department admissions committee. An application is not considered complete until all requirements have been received, including the online portfolio and the interview evaluation.

The work should reflect a full range of your ideas, interests, experiences and abilities in the arts. This can include work in any medium, in finished or sketch form, and can be the result of an assigned project or a self-directed exploration.We recommend that you include some developmental research and/or preparatory work for one of your submissions. It is helpful to show your process of thinking and investigation so we can see how you develop your ideas. A sketchbook or journal page may be an appropriate way to share your process. Consider also including the finished piece and preparatory work(s) in a single image. There is an area in SlideRoom where you can include brief text descriptions for your submissions.We strongly discourage the submission of works in PDF format that include multiple pages, especially when there are numerous elements on a single page. These are difficult for reviewers to view and assess and are likely to exceed the allowed limit of 20 work examples.
