　　TheassessmentfortheAstronomyMPhildegreeisexclusivelybyresearchandaprojectandsupervisormusthavebeenidentifiedpriortoaformalapplicationbeingmadebythestudent.Thereisnotaughtelement.ThedegreeisnotsuitableforphysicistsandmathematicianswishingtoprepareforaresearchPhDinAstrophysicsandthenumberofstudentsadmittedissmall.Many,butnotallofourpreviousstudentshadcompletedanundergraduatedegreeinNorthAmericaandreturnedtheretoundertakeaPhDaftercompletingtheMPhilinCambridge.

　　Historically,mostMPhilstudentshavesecuredfundingfortheirMPhilstudiesthroughapplicationstoscholarshipprogrammessuchasChurchill,GatesandMarshall.

　　Theaimsoftheprogrammeare:

　　togivestudentswithrelevantexperienceatfirst-degreeleveltheopportunitytocarryoutfocussedresearchinthedisciplineunderclosesupervision;and

　　togivestudentstheopportunitytoacquireordevelopskillsandexpertiserelevanttotheirresearchinterests.

　　LearningOutcomes

　　Bytheendoftheprogramme,studentswillhave:

　　acomprehensiveunderstandingoftechniques,andathoroughknowledgeoftheliterature,applicabletotheirownresearch;

　　demonstratedoriginalityintheapplicationofknowledge,togetherwithapracticalunderstandingofhowresearchandenquiryareusedtocreateandinterpretknowledgeintheirfield;

　　shownabilitiesinthecriticalevaluationofcurrentresearchandresearchtechniquesandmethodologies;

　　demonstratedsomeself-directionandoriginalityintacklingandsolvingproblems,andactedautonomouslyintheplanningandimplementationofresearch.

　　入学要求：

　　ApplicantsforthiscourseshouldhaveachievedaUKFirstclassHonoursDegree.
